- Korfball is the European cousin of Basketball with very similar rules ("Korfball" means "Basketball" in Dutch)
- First played in the Netherlands in 1902 and has professional leagues
- Governed by the International Korfball Federation (IKF), an IOC-recognized Federation
- Demonstration sport in the 1920 and 1928 Olympics; since 1985 it has been in the World Games (for all sports seeking Olympic inclusion)
- Officially mixed-gendered/co-ed; each gender defends their own gender
- No dribbling, so lots of passing and teamwork
- Hoop is 11.5 feet high and has no backboard
- Closely guarded rule: a player cannot shoot if a defender is within arm's distance (this neutralizes many height and size differences)
- Several unique versions: traditional indoor/outdoor (8x8) and fast-growing beach (4x4)
